Psychological Anatomy of Debt - (2996)

Any Debt

How do people incur any kind of debt? There are two ways that people incur debts.

One way is when we give somebody something and the other person does not pay it back. The other way is when a person takes something from us without returning it or compensating for its loss.

That is also exactly how we create psychological debts - via the above two ways.

Psychological Debt

To create a psychological debt in ourselves, something psychological has to be taken from us and not returned, or we give something psychological to someone and it is not returned psychologically.

For example, when our dignity is taken from us we create a psychological debt within us that works to later take the same amount of dignity back from the other person. When a piece of respect for our public image is taken from us we create a debt. When we have worked hard and have given our time, good will, effort, attention and it is not acknowledged we can create a psychological debt. When our sense of fairness is not satisfied we create psychological debts.

So then to not create psychological debts we need to stop giving and start giving. What? That's right we need to reverse the order.

Less and Less Psychological Debts

Stop giving psychologically in the situation where things are not returned or paid back to us, and start giving when things are taken from us.

Ok but how?

Do things for others with no expectation. Don't give anything where we want a result or compensation or reciprocation from the person. Renounce any kind of result before before doing anything.

When things are taken from us, then give them, renounce the thing that has been taken from us, that we are now deciding to give. This not only applies to physical things, like money, a pen, a USB drive etc. but to psychological things. So if we feel love is taken from us where we feel because another does not reciprocate it we can't love any more, then we have to renounce to the idea that we have lost love and still retain some love in our heart for ourselves. Self-remembering helps here because love comes from the essence and so we never lose love.

End (2996).
