We can be present for a variety of reasons. To listen carefully, to not make a noise, to observe something, to drive home safely for example, are all instances where we use presence.
What are we present for is a good question to ask.
Before presence there is attention and alertness. Attention first followed by alertness.
Once we are present we can bring what we are going to be present to.
Say we are going to be present to the essence - to the soul. We would remember the soul in our mind and direct our attention, alertness of perception and presence to it.
Then we can be present for our essence, i.e. self-remembering through presence.
