Ouroboros
The snake that devours its own
tail. This symbol that I am very sure that you all have seen before is called the
Ouroboros. It has been used by many orders, cultures and esoteric schools. The
Alchemists were well known for using the symbol of the ouroboros, as well as some of the old Gnostic orders.
Significance
The symbol of the ouroboros
reveals a great truth about creation, and therefore the Absolute, as what is in
creation are reflections of the principles and laws within the Absolute.
It is said that the Absolute
knows itself more through the act of creating. Creation is said to serve as a mirror for
the Absolute to contemplate itself so to know itself more and more.
The Serpent That Devours Its Own Tail…
Everything is contained within the absolute and everything
returns to the absolute. The beginning and the end touch, opposites unite,
the great and the small touch, etc.
When the opposites touch, a cycle is complete. A creation has
been made, has reached fruition and the benefits of that creation feed back into the
creator. The creator nourishes itself from what it has created.
This principle is everywhere in life and it is the reason
why male and female attract, life touches death and death touches life and the great
is attracted to the small and the small attracts the great and the small details
of life are the most enlightening and revealing. Just as Buddha rose enlightened
after contemplating a wall in front of him. The small details of the ego reveal
the most about the ego. All of this is in accordance with the design or pattern
of the Ouroboros.
End (1707).
