Self-love in the egoic sense expresses in reaction.
To love ourselves in the conscious way is the correct thing to do. So to have self-love is correct it is just how consciously is it expressed.
When self-love is expressed mechanically it is expressed through the other person as a reference point and the way of expression is through reaction.
The conscious self-love is expressed through non-reaction.
It is the non-reaction that opens the door to generating true self-love.
Each unfair comment directed our way becomes fair when we use it to increase our quality of self-love.
This is essentially how we overcome the unfairness that mechanical self-love reacts to.
At the heart of the mechanical defense reactions of self-love is the protection of the love for ourselves.
If we always react when we are treated with unfair disrespect it will be truly difficult to develop conscious self-love.
With mechanical self-love we often think we are not worthy of the love of others and so we get disappointed, anxious or angry. Neither of those are the conscious right reaction. The conscious response is to love ourselves more and hold that and not allow that the love for ourselves be lowered or determined by apparently how someone else feels towards us.
