They say love is like a fire, an all consuming fire. Unfortunately though the down side is that love like fire burns.
So many people have been burnt out by love. They no longer want anything to do with it: "that's it for my life, I'll love my best pal - my dog, and that'll do me.", "love is too complicated and full of problems, don't need any of that at this stage of my life" are common things you hear people say. Even there are people who fell in love and allowed the fire of their love to grow so much that it made them go semi-crazy burning them all out.
Love is meant to build and strengthen, increase one's happiness and take one closer to the sublime, but the common experience is that it hurts like hell and burns just as hellishly.
It can't be that love is wrong, it must come down to the way we use it. I guess, to not knowing how to use love towards others and oneself.
Fire is not wrong, it is so beautiful, mysterious, spiritual, energetic and powerful, colourful and dynamic - like an alive spirit. Use it properly and it does marvels, though use it wrongly and it is supremely destructive.
So how to use it so that it does not burn - that's the question. Don't let it burn you is the answer. When it is not burning you, you won't do and say things that burn the other person.
The more educated answer from the teachings is, that the way is to move gradually with real comprehension from sensual and emotional love to conscious love.
