In the legend of the Buddha and the serpent there are several elements to highlight. this post is about highlighting those elements. The next post will be the practical conclusion.
The serpent represents the sexual energy.
If the Buddha had to wrestle with the serpent we have to also.
All was ok when Buddha was adoring the spiritual aspect of the maiden and in fact that kind of admiration actually protected both him and her. As soon as he lowered that into the physical aspect then the trouble began. The Divine aspect in the maiden left. As which is always the case as the two natures, higher and lower can not occupy the same space at the same time. One must give way to the other.
When Buddha became entranced by her physical beauty his lower nature actually became aroused and active thus displacing his own divine nature and also repelling her divine nature as well, as always 'like attracts like' in esotericism.
Because Buddha was great and strong he used his will power symbolised by his human strength to free himself from the serpent but he failed. He realised that he had to call upon his spiritual parts to help him and use something different and do something different.
To become smaller and smaller was the solution. Which has to do with humility and with psychological death. Of course to become smaller and smaller means the lower human nature part becomes smaller and naturally the spiritual part grows and grows and it is the spiritual part that frees one from the serpent.
The act of becoming smaller also indicates the supplication for help.
This process of freeing himself from the serpent was not an overnight work but in realty is one that takes years.
The next post will concentrate on the practical work aspect of this legend.
