Recap
A mantra is a sound that encloses an energy, a power that is intended to set the chanter's consciousness free from his/her mind so that the chanter's consciousness can experience and meld with the energy enclosed in the mantra.
Here is an example to illustrate the above point.
Roger chants the mantra HAR-PO-CRAT-IST. Those letters form a mantra and that mantra is a sound, and a sound is a vibration and what makes a vibration is an energy. So Roger chanting HAR-PO-CRAT-IST starts to make his whole mind sound, and because it is sounding it is also vibrating and because the mind is falling into order, Roger's consciousness will begin to detach from the mind and it will naturally begin to experience the energy of the mantra and then experience the power behind the energy.
That is how mantras work.

We most often don't really get them to work because we lack concentration. What really gives us concentration is trust, hope, faith and higher trust. In that order.
So trust allows us to be open to accept the mantra, that is to accept the power of sound. Then hope allows us to embrace the mantra intensely, and faith allows us to really penetrate into it with deep emotion and then higher trust allows us to identify with the sound, that is to become that sound, to trustfully surrender ourselves to it. Then magic happens...
Identification
A note on identification. Identification is not bad or good. Like a knife or a box of matches. It all depends on what we identify with. If we identify with things that are not us - all suffering happens. If we identify with what we are - all peace and authencity happens.
So identify with the ego - then we all the know the results and feelings. Identify with the essence then we also know the results.
You know identification is not possible without the elements of trust, faith and hope. When we identify with the ego we trust it, we have hope in it and we believe in it don't we? When we stop believing in it, that ego is going to start to die.
