Introduction
I can’t emphasise this enough, how magical and marvellously immediately
effective a change in reference points is in our psychology.
It can turn a difficult situation around within seconds. It
can change our internal panorama from pain and darkness to light, balance, relief,
warmth, joy and the mini revelation of what is truer.
Pain as the Marvellous Indicator of a Wrong Reference Point
We always have a reference point at play in any ego and in
any mental process.
When we have the reference point in something wrong or false
or something that is temporary in nature we will undoubtedly feel pain! No
doubt about it!
If you feel pain, go straight away to find the reference
point.
It may take some careful observation at times but it can always
certainly be found. I’ll provide some posts about that as soon as I have more
time.
The Key is to Change the Reference Point to the Truer Place
Once we have found the reference point what we have to do to
make the magic happen within our psychology is to move that reference point from
the false place to the true or truer position.
The truer places for the reference point are usually
ourselves, our internal divine presence (our Real Being), the path, the work on
ourselves and reality.
These things are much truer, everlasting, permanent,
prevailing and correct than the reference points or our mind, our concepts, the
past, other people, the opinions of others, our fantasies, our self-concept,
our self-image, our expectations, our ideas, our ‘shoulds’ and ‘should nots’
etc.
Note the reference point of every ego is in a different
wrong place to the other egos that we have. This is our work to discover the wrong
reference point in every ego and relocate it in the right place.
Example
One time a missionary in a talk gave a very curious example.
He said that he didn’t mind if others hated his guts but he cared a lot, if
people didn’t like his cooking or thought or felt that his cooking was bad.
This was because he was working as a chef at the time.
This shows us that his reference point for his ability to
feel fine with himself is in the way others feel towards his cooking.
To put our reference point in others is always painful! All the
time!
Relocating the Reference Point
When we know the false reference point we can relocate it and
then to make the magic work we have to begin to see and generate our psychological
processes from this or relative to this new reference point.
For example, with self-love, the wrong reference point is in
other people. The right reference point is inside of us. With the ego of
self-love we care about what others feel towards us and we then relocate the
reference point to be within ourselves we care about us generating love towards
ourselves and our Being. We care more about how we are feeling towards ourselves
and our Being, and loving others is big part of that. We can’t feel well with
ourselves if we are not loving others can we? So as you can see everything
changes when change our reference point.
Conclusion
Relocating the reference point is a very psychologically
practical thing to do! Do it and you will see such a marvellous and magical
turn around in your psychology and its processes.
